On May 15, 2006, Chinese news media reported that engineers were pouring the last of the concrete to finish the construction of the massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in central China. The dam is intended to provide flood control and hydroelectric power. When all the generators are operational (projected for 2009), Three Gorges will become the largest hydroelectric project in the world.

This pair of images shows the dam in partial completion in July 2000 and again in May 2006. The Yangtze River flows from upper left toward upper right in the images. In 2000, construction along each riverbank had occurred, but sediment-filled water still flowed freely through a narrow channel near the river’s south bank (bottom left). A smaller passage closer to the north bank of the river, where the water appears calmer, is likely a system of temporary locks that allowed for boat passage. A second dam bypass appears to be under construction about 1 kilometer to the north.

By May 15, 2006, the dam spanned the entire river, and a large reservoir had filled behind it, to the northwest. The new reservoir is more than 3 kilometers (more than 2 miles) across just upstream of the dam. White spray shoots through gates in the center portion of the dam. The former locks are much less prominent, and the new ones to the north appear as a linear arrangement of thin, blue rectangles.

Title: Returning Home Together after Fulfilling the Wish: A New Being in Heaven and Earth / Chinese Painting

On November 7^th 2000, in the TuanHe labor camp, a tragedy that caused much sadness and indignation took place: Wang Lixuan, a very kind young mother and her 8-month-old son Hao Meng were both found dead in jail. With extreme sadness, Wang Lixuan’s parents witnessed the heart-breaking signs of abuse on their daughter and grandson’s bodies: Wang Lixuan’s neck and collar bones were broken, her skull was crushed, and a needle was left in her waist. There were two deep scars on her baby’s ankles and two bruise spots on his head, and his nose was full of blood. All these indications of torture have been confirmed by a forensic physician, who indicated that it was very likely that the baby had been shackled at the ankles and hung upside down.

Wang Lixuan and her son were the 93rd confirmed cases of Falun Dafa practitioners being tortured to death from Jiang’s evil persecution of Falun Gong. In October 2000, Wang Lixuan and her 7-month-old son, who was still breast feeding at that time, were taken into custody and detained in the TuanHe labor camp because she tried to clarify the truth about Falun Dafa and appealed to the government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. In the labor camp the authorities tortured them in many different ways in an attempt to force her to give up Falun Gong.
