Man claims responsibility for Phoenix mystery lights

April 23rd, 2008 @ 10:04am
by Hanna Scott/KTAR and KTAR Newsroom

A Phoenix man says he caused the red light display that mystified thousands of people as it floated across the north Phoenix sky Monday night.

Click here for photos of the lights over Phoenix

The man, who did not want to be identified, said he used fishing line to attach road flares to helium-filled balloons, then lit the flares and launched them a minute apart from his back yard. He said he believed turbulence created by a passing jet caused the balloons to move around.

Lino Mailo said he saw his next-door neighbor launch the balloons.

``I saw the guy releasing the balloons with the flares on them," Mailo said. ``There is no doubt that they came from here."

He added, ``I don't think it's a cool prank because it can panic people."

Phoenix Police helicopter pilot Bruce Bates, who saw the lights, said the balloons explanation makes sense.

``People say they saw different shapes -- a square, a diamond, an arrow, all these different shapes. Well, that's just the balloons moving around in the wind currents," he said.

Some people will always think the lights were UFOs, Bates said.

``I think people want to believe what they want to believe."

only the true criteria decides this judgement. < hua-hua >

it is by the historical process of the jesus character accumulating it's various facets that it has simultaneously gathered it's true power.

my arguement is that jesus is important precisely because it has gathered all of these motifs of various origins. and that it is because it serves as this type of reservoir from throughout many generations and cultures that it has become this sublime.
this way it is still an open discourse.

but, if we play this out as they do on the field of religion, the very persons who we'd hope would be helped, are forced to take sides and take things for granted, things which when worked through in themselves are the raw path of personal development itself, and the course of development into a truly moral citizen and being. (and not just into another identity/power prop.) in fact, the more religion is used to empower or disempower one identity over another, the more it actually loses it's power as reservoir of the ideal(s).

of course, this method of discourse, may not nourish someone whose ideal is the subjugation of those around him. though it would still illuminate such a character.

The kingdom of ends < hillofbeans >

The Kingdom of Ends is a thought experiment in the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant.(provided here per wiki)

The kingdom of ends is a hypothetical state of man derived from the categorical imperative. Rational beings are defined as beings who are capable of moral deliberation; they can choose to act by maxims that have universality. It is from this point of view that they must judge themselves and their actions. This conception of the categorical imperative would lead to another - the kingdom of ends.

By the phrase kingdom, he means the "union of different rational beings in a system by common laws." Since it is through laws that consequences are evaluated based on their universal validity, he states that we can conceive of a systematic whole that includes both the rational beings as ends in themselves, rather than simply means to other ends, and the unique ends which these rational beings may aspire to. This systematic whole is the kingdom of ends.

People can only belong to the kingdom of ends when they give universal laws unto it, and are subject to those same laws, and all laws within. Such rational beings must regard themselves simultaneously as sovereign, when making laws, and as subject, when obeying them. Morality exists in the action of all universal law which can make the kingdom of ends possible. This universal law must be first capable of being universalized completely, and being given its power from a rational being's own will - not exercising rule over it.

in Micah 6:6-8 (NIV), we find these words.

6 With what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?
7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

"the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight"(Proverbs 15:8).

Hebrews 11:4

4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

Matthew 5:23-24 NKJV

23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
